Luba Tunnicliffe (Viola) Hannah Watson (Piano)

This concert by two scholarship graduates of the Guildhall School of Music, presents a pair of delightful transcriptions for viola & piano. The first by J.S. Bach is a cornerstone of the viola repertoire, borrowed from the viola da gamba which was a precursor of the modern instrument. As an enthusiastic viola player himself, we think Bach would have approved! The Rachmaninov Sonata is borrowed from the cello, but make no mistake, the rich lyrical sonorities of the viola and indulgent mysterious textures of Rachmaninov’s music are a perfect match.
