Luba Tunnicliffe (Viola) Hannah Watson (Piano)

This concert by two scholarship graduates of the Guildhall School of Music, presents a pair of delightful transcriptions for viola & piano. The first by J.S. Bach is a cornerstone of the viola repertoire, borrowed from the viola da gamba which was a precursor of the modern instrument. As an enthusiastic viola player himself, we think Bach would have approved! The Rachmaninov Sonata is borrowed from the cello, but make no mistake, the rich lyrical sonorities of the viola and indulgent mysterious textures of Rachmaninov’s music are a perfect match.

RÊVERIE: The life and loves of Claude Debussy  - See this link for a sneak preview! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20MaPh68wXI&feature=youtu.be

Lucy Parham (Piano), Tim McInnerny (Narrator)

The wonderful Lucy Parham, known for her inventive and captivating presentations, joins theatrical forces with actor Tim McInnerny, to bring the world of the great Debussy vividly to life. Rêverie takes the form of Claude Debussy’s personal journal, following his initial success with the Prix de Rome in 1885 to his untimely death in 1918. It is punctuated with solo piano works ranging from the ever-popular lyricism of Clair de Lune, Rêverie and The Girl with the Flaxen Hair to such virtuosic showpieces as Jardins sous la pluie, the Etudes and L’isle joyeuse.

Julian Clef was discovered in Kerala, India, where he had made astonishing musical progress without any formal tuition. He was offered the opportunity to study at Chetham’s School of Music and has developed into a mature artist who has been championed by the great Sir András Schiff in concerts throughout Germany and in New York. From the heart of the piano repertoire, Julian has drawn together a programme of contrasts, exploring a wide range of sonority and expression. He pitches four Preludes & Fugues against each other, transports us into the mesmerising soundworld of Debussy’s Images, and finally comes to a dramatic climax in Chopin’s Sonata No.2, famed for its otherworldly Funeral March.

Piano Recital by Martin Roscoe

Come and hear the Artistic Director of Ribble Valley International Piano Week, Martin Roscoe, for an evening of popular fantasies by the great composers, and with a wide range of moods and characters. Mozart’s short Fantasy in D minor is one of his most popular piano pieces, by turns wistful, dramatic and light-hearted.  Schumann’s Kreisleriana, “8 Fantasias” has similar contrasts – the music is either frenetic and passionate or contemplative and serene. Beethoven’s Sonata quasi una fantasia has four very contrasting movements played continuously, and Brahms’ Op 116 Fantasies, written towards the end of his life are intimate and economical. Finally Chopin’s F minor fantasy is a fifteen minute story of turbulence contrasted with moments of complete calm.  Details of RVIPW 2014, which will run from Wednesday 16th July to Saturday 19th July will be available.

Programme

Mozart Fantasy in D minor K.397
Schumann Kreisleriana (8 Fantasies) Op.16
Beethoven Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia in E flat Op.27 No.2
Brahms 3 Fantasies Op.116 Nos 1,4 and 7
Chopin Fantasy in F minor Op.49
